ACCELERATE Project

The ACCELERATE Project is an NIH-funded research study (U01HL156942) conducted by the University of Abuja Centre of Excellence in Sickle Cell Disease Research and Training and the ISEE Lab at New York University School of Global Public Health. The purpose of the study is to see if training healthcare providers in the adoption of Hydroxyurea (HU) helps to improve Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) management. HU is on the list of essential medicines for Nigeria. This study is line with the Nigerian government released guidelines supporting interventions for HU adoption for improved SCD management.

To increase the adoption of HU among healthcare providers, the ACCELERATE Project will:

  1. Screen patients for SCD

  2. Initiate HU treatment for eligible SCD patients

  3. Maintain HU dosage for improved management of SCD
